Don't know why I've been gone so long other than I must have needed a break, or didn't have much to say. But I feel my mojo returning, so.....I'll be back....elsie123http://www.blogger.com/profile/08692448403197289205noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8066459778111628580.post-36891671172569852852014-02-28T19:18:00.002-06:002014-02-28T19:18:46.594-06:00February flew by real quickYou turn around twice, and blink your eyes, and another month has come and gone.

Remember my quilt-as-you-go quilt? (QAYG) I can finally say it's finished. And before March. Yes, it was just yesterday that I put in my final binding stitch, but it's done. I really like it, and glad I gave this method a try. I actually consider it reversible, though the front in strips is my favorite. I played a bit of an "I spy" game with Elise the other day, and among other things asked her to find a bird. We couldn't find any, which really surprised me...and one may still show up as we look further. Still, I'm considering appliqueing a bird somewhere on the front. Probably at one of the junctions where the lattice doesn't exactly match! Here it is, front and back.

I'm not sure of the size, maybe 60 x 72? But it fits on top of a double bed fine, and would drape over a twin bed nicely.

I've started my annual home improvement project. I try to do something each year, and this year the master bath is getting a bit of an upgrade with new faucets, mirrors over the vanity, and lights. David got the faucets in last weekend, and we got the big mirror down and out. Wouldn't you know, when we took the mirror down, there was a hole in the sheetrock. Guess they figured it would be covered, so why worry about it. I trimmed it to a workable size to patch, and will work this weekend on getting it textured to hopefully be a decent match, and then paint the area and put up the mirrors. I have someone lined up to do the lights, but that may not happen immediately. Just have to see how his schedule works out.

Here's the before. The mirror will go away and be replaced with two mirrors, one over each sink. Those lights will change into two fixtures, one over each mirror. Each fixture will have 3 bulbs. The faucets have been updated to replace the standard builder's faucet.

Here you can see where the hole was behind the mirror, though you're seeing it after the messiness was cut away to a decent rectangle for patching.

And this is one of the two new faucets. I love the high neck on it. So much easier if there's anything somewhat bulky I want to fit under it.
In other news, Elise and I worked a puzzle this week. Went down to 550 pieces instead of 1000. Partly because I just liked the picture with all of the little characters and vehicles, but it also worked well to have the pieces just a bit bigger. The packaging is now smaller than in years past, and some makers will include a nice size print of the picture for you to use instead of the box picture, but this one did not. The bigger pieces helped.
Guess that's it for now. Have a good weekend.

elsie123http://www.blogger.com/profile/08692448403197289205noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8066459778111628580.post-73167264373378134852014-02-02T12:22:00.003-06:002014-02-03T09:24:40.495-06:00February stuffTime managed to slip away the last couple of weeks didn't it?

I'm still doing some art regularly, though not necessarily in my journal. The last couple of weeks I've been playing with my Zentangle book. It's fun, and nice to just let go and doodle. The book I'm working from is "The Art of Zentangle". Its been a great introduction, and has several practice opportunities.

This first picture is one of the practice pieces after I'd already started, a whimsical fantasy garden. It was initially kind of a swirly L on the left that spanned across the bottom to the right. I've added in some butterflies, and the doodly swirls and doodads.

In the next picture you can see I've carried it further. More flowers, and a chirpy little bird. I've also had the book spiral bound, which makes it much easier to handle and keep my place.

Great artwork? Hahaha, no. But it is fun.

I stopped by Red Lobster yesterday for lunch, one of my favorite places that I treat myself to occasionally. Usually when I dine alone, I have a book to read or puzzles to work while I wait. This time I took in my book of Cryptograms. The waitress happened to notice it, and asked what it was. I explained they were word puzzles, and different letters are substituted for the correct letters....you're breaking a code. Seeing her interest, I pulled a page out of my puzzle magazine and encouraged her to try it herself. Just a few minutes later she came back by (it was early in the day and pretty quiet) and showed me her start. She sat down, and a few minutes later another of the servers came by and joined in. With a few hints on patterns to look for, they solved a couple of the puzzles. I think she's hooked! I really enjoyed the unexpected company, and I'm sure I'll be back.

I'm making progress on the string quilt. I've finished piecing the last border, and will start the quilting on that piece this afternoon. I hope that by next weekend, it will be attached to the rest of the QAYG quilt, and I'll be ready to put the binding on.

Elise went to her first Daddy/Daughter Dance. The Parks and Recreation department puts it on every year around Valentine's Day. She got a pretty dress, and some new Cinderella dance slippers, and enjoyed some special time with Daddy.

She took great care in getting ready.

And finally was all set to go to the dance. She had prepared the map to the dance earlier in the week. I understand they had a great time dancing the evening away.

That led me to thinking that I like the road less traveled. Give me a back road, free of the congestion of city traffic, and I'm happy.
In my sewing world, I'm pleased to say I've completed a UFO. I started this tree skirt back in the Fall, and used it as a table topper even though it was not quilted or have finished edges. I decided to back it with an autumn fabric, making it usable year round if I want. I even learned how to do a binding for a reversible quilt where the fabrics are quite different, and one fabric wouldn't look the best. Here are the binding strips using both fabrics.

This process requires a few more steps, but it wasn't too hard. Sharon Pederson has written books on it, and has the binding technique in her videos, part 1 and part 2. Since this topper has 8 sides, I had a multitude of times to try it out. Each side is done individually, and you can either hand stitch the back side down, or machine stitch. I chose to machine stitch on this one, though my preferred method is by hand. I like how the sides come together, I may even consider it in a regular quilt.

Here it is completed, showing both sides. I have to say it appears to stick out a bit, and I'm wanting a more drapey look. The topper has just been in the washer, and will go in the dryer in a few minutes. I hope it will relax somewhat...I'll let you know. This was the first time I used a fusible batting, and that may contribute to the stiffness. According to the package directions, washing will release the fusible properties.

This next week I hope to resume another UFO, my string quilt. The side borders are now complete, and I've cut the foundation for the top and bottom borders. I don't know if I can get it all together by February, but if not, surely before March rolls around.

In family news, my son-in-law had a birthday this week. They lead pretty busy lives, but I managed to have pizza waiting for them when they came to pick up Elise. She helped make the cake . Happy birthday David!
Having done a few pieces in the past year, my comfort level has increased. However...there comes a time when you think is it worth the time to do all the intricate steps.

When I was looking at the Fandominstitches website with the Sherlock Holmes patterns, Elise saw one for Ariel the mermaid that she wanted. I told her that would make a good mug rug and she agreed. Here's their picture of her:

I took my time and got through almost all of her, except the eyelashes. They looked so tedious. I made an executive decision and decided to embroider her lashes instead, and really think it was an excellent move. Here's my version:

There is a little mistake in it where I missed one little triangle of flesh color, but Elise likes it and I do too. She took it home to use because she said they didn't have any mug rugs at home. This one came out about 10"x10".

And in case you're interested, see my new area rug that she's on? I decided it was time to switch out so I got it this past weekend.

The second prompt for my art journal has been posted. It is "Somewhere, a Simple Place". I've got one or two ideas floating around in my head, we'll see what I come up with. In the meantime, the journal will hold more than just the prompts. Last week I worked on a collage while Elise was painting, and the collage made it into the journal.

Okay, that's it for now. I hope to be back before the next prompt is up to show what I came up with.
She's very creative, and she's eleven. Because she's shown an interest in making outfits for some of her stuffed or plastic toys, for Christmas I gave her 2 books... one geared to tween-age sewing and the other to help get her familiar with a sewing machine. A few days later we worked on her first steps. She practiced sewing straight and curvy lines, and pivoting for a turn. Then so we could wrap up the session with an actual project, she made a chicken pin cushion. We both had a good time. :)

The nice thing about this age is the lack of inhibition. As we looked at fabric for the project, she asked if she could use green and blue, her favorite colors. Of course! There are no quilt police! Then she chose buttons for the eyes, one yellow and one red. Yep, she's going to do just fine.

I mentioned last week about the art journal project I've joined in on. My cover is still a work in progress, but it's coming along. Here's how I'm progressing. You can see I'm using a composition book. After watching several youtube videos, it looks like it will work fine. I learned to open the book flat, and tie a ribbon all the way around the binding, then repeat that process at intervals to have about 5 or 6 ribbons. This helps secure the binding, to keep it from separating from the pages as they become heavier with content.

Next I inserted some little pages to go underneath those ribbons. I took newspaper inserts, and trimmed them down where they would have a staple intact. I slipped that under the ribbon. As I use those pages, I will gesso the insert to cover up the advertising as well as give it a base for whatever I decide to do. I'm totally winging this (after viewing the videos) because I do not come with a scrapbooking background.

Next I gesso-ed the cover. This covered up the design and gave me a blank canvas.
I've not finished the cover yet, so I'll show that later.

We received our first prompt. Remember there will be 52 prompts, one given weekly. No right or wrong, we do as we please. The first was Up, Up, and Away...as in soaring into the new year. Several have posted theirs on Facebook, and there are a lot of talented people. Lots of balloons, hot air balloons, wings, etc. I saw them, and knowing I'm not a particularly "airy" person, I took a different little spin. Picture a little ant farm with all the trails that ants make. Picture one little ant on his journey to the top. Then picture him going further, and climbing up a tree. Going out on a limb, he hops on a leaf, and "soars" through the air. "Whee! We all want to soar..."
I know, I have a long way to go. But, thankfully this is a journey and there are not expectations of perfection anywhere along the way.
Until the next time, have fun and express yourself!elsie123http://www.blogger.com/profile/08692448403197289205noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8066459778111628580.post-29726865664792255542014-01-03T06:11:00.001-06:002014-01-03T06:11:35.189-06:00new year, new possibilities2014, can you believe it? Another new year, and new possibilities.

But first, let me slip to the end of 2013 to share my latest paper-pieced quilt project. My friend Odalie recently posted on Facebook that she got a Sherlock Holmes book with all the stories in it. That gave me a clue that she must be a fan. As I was looking through the Fandom site at their free paper-piece patterns, I saw that there were some for Sherlock Holmes, and immediately thought of Odalie. I think its kind of serendippity when that happens, so I decided to make her a mug rug using two of the designs. They also had a magnifying glass, but I couldn't fit 3 items onto the mug rug. This is what I came up with.

They have all kinds of designs. In fact, Elise saw one of Ariel (Disney mermaid) that she liked, so that's probably my next pp project.

Moving on, 2014 is the start of an art journal project group on Facebook. I've been wanting to be more artsy, and I think this will be a good step in that direction. I got a zentangle book for my birthday, and that will lend itself well to the journal project too. At least for part of it. I plan on prepping the journal this weekend so I can be ready for the first of 52 prompts in 2014. I'm already growing...I learned what prepping the journal means! There are a lot of youtube videos out there on the subject (gotta love youtube) and its really inspiring.

Okay, time to get up and about in 2014! Have a great new year. :)
I made totes and tea towels, and one mug rug. Along the way, I was able to use up some of my odds and ends of fq's and fabric.
I like how they all turned out, but I must say I really like the little mug rug with the ducks. They are surrounded with nature fabrics, and flying geese overhead. Almost hard to let that one go, but I know I can make another.

I received some wonderful gifts in return. I've said it before, but there are some talented ladies on the HGTV Quilting & Needlework Forum. Elise was my helper in opening the daily packages, so here she is as we opened the box.
This is the third year I've participated in this particular swap. I hope we do it again next year.

Stay tuned, tomorrow I'll get back with some Christmas pictures of the kids. :)

Hope your days are merry and bright....
I originally thought I wanted a lavender or purple, but had a hard time finding one. Let's face it, not that many places sell chenille spreads anymore, it's pretty much comforters. I found one at a garage sale that I thought might work, even though it was queen size. In my excitement of finding it, and the bright sun, I thought it was lavender...turns out it was a blue. No problem, my friend Linda was glad to take it.

Then I got the bright idea to look on Ebay. Lo and behold, there were chenille spreads! Granted, you can only go by the pictures and what the seller has to say. But as I thought about it, being previously owned was not a problem for me. The bed is in the toy room anyway, and won't get everyday use. And even if it gets dirty, it can go in the washer. I decided on a white one, which the picture showed to be in pretty good shape. The seller disclosed it has a couple of pulls on the tufts. For $10 plus shipping, I decided to give it a try. It shipped immediately, I washed and dried it upon its arrival, and here it is. Not bad at all.
Getting into the last days before Christmas, I've visited a few stores here and there. Last year just a few days before Christmas I bought my Kitchen Aid mixer. This year, I happened to see something that I've kind of been needing, and just splurged and bought it. I'm glad I was able to help the economy. :) It's almost sad when there's nothing you really need, but little things give me pleasure.
When I bought my little Janome sewing machine a few years ago, it was because my Singer had been giving me problems. The Singer has since been sitting in a closet. A few weeks ago I decided to get it serviced. After having it serviced, I decided to sew a project on it. Well....it didn't take long to realize my Janome is my preferred machine, and the Singer will remain a back-up. I admit it, I've gotten spoiled to choosing the needle-down position, and to having an automatic needle threader!

That's all for now. I plan on being back before Christmas, but if I'm not, Merry Christmas to all.
It's cold outside! But that's helped me get a bit done, so I'm fine with it. Especially since I was able to stock up on a few groceries ahead of time, and my electricity has stayed on. Not everyone one was so fortunate, and many have been without power.

Earlier this week Elise let me know she wants to sew. She liked the idea of sewing a quilt top for her Sarah doll, so, she chose some fabric, layed the squares out in an order she wanted, and did the footwork on my sewing machine while I guided the fabric through. Together we tied it off. I think I now have a helper for whenever I sit down to sew. :)
I haven't done my Friday Favorites in a long time, but looking at my sewing bag, I realized I needed to put it on here and tell it's story. Many years ago, probably about 34 since I think I was pregnant with Elizabeth, Mom was in town for a visit. We were browsing through the local 5 & 10, and I really liked a piece of fabric that was a lush green jungle print with a tiger on it. It wasn't suitable for clothing, but Mom had the terrific idea of a sewing bag. She sewed it together that afternoon, and I've been using it ever since. I'm sure she never realized the pleasure I would get out of it. In fact, each time I pick it up and use it, I think of her. I'd say that in itself makes it pretty special. In it's early years, it carried counted cross-stitch projects that I worked on during my lunch hours, and as years rolled by and interests changed, embroidery and quilting projects were occasionally toted to work. Since I'm retired, it can usually be found next to my easy chair, and going off to my QB Saturdays. Who knew that a simple sewing bag could bring such pleasure?
I think this is probably my favorite holiday, a time to reflect on the good things in my life and realize how blessed I am.

I enjoyed my day at Robert and Angela's, and Elizabeth and Elise were able to join us as well before she joined David at his Dad's house. Can't ask for a better day than to be with my kids and grandkids.

After lunch we had a bit of craft time, and the kids each made a snowman ornament for the Christmas tree. I was so busy working with them that I didn't get a picture of their masterpieces, but we had a good time.

Recently we got together and went to see The Nutcracker ballet. I've never been to a ballet performance. Elise is taking a dance class, and Ashlynn has in the past, so I thought it would be fun to go. It was put on by Ballet Frontier of Texas, and the majority of the cast were students at their school. Such a nice way to see a performance at a reasonable price. I'd like to go to more of their productions.
In sewing news, I came across a cute little gnome tree ornament on fellow blogger Roolen's blog. In fact, I'm making 7 of them for Christmas this year. Here are the first two I've completed. The others are in various stages, close to completion, but these two jumped to the top so I could take them for Ashlynn and Rhett to put on their tree. By the way, if you click on the link to Roolen's blog, you'll see it's in Russian. She has a Google translator button on the far right side, so it's easy enough to be able to read it in English.

And, final project in the works for your viewing. My friend Linda and I are making a tshirt quilt for a mutual friend. I've enjoyed working on it, as I've never done one with the shirts joined directly to each other. I usually have a sashing in between the shirts. But this is a nice change, and it's fun that she could put so many shirts in it. This same size with sashing would have been 12 shirts. It appears in the picture that it will have a border, but that is actually the backing fabric, there will be no border.

This was one of those nights when everyone was there. Let's face it, trying to get 12 people together every month can sometimes be a challenge as life can get in the way. When the need arises, we get subsitutes and keep playing. Since we had everyone, I wanted to get pictures of the group. So here we are!
And what was on the menu, you ask? Inquiring minds always want to know. I got some sliced beef from Spring Creek BBQ, and the ladies had the option of a plate dinner or sandwiches. I made some baked beans and potatoes au gratin, along with deviled eggs. Dessert was a cherry danish, using my friend Judy's recipe. We also had some munchies of seasoned oyster crackers and M&M's. We eat first, then the games begin.

The Bunco mug rug consolation prize was won by Lisa (top picture on the far left).

I made another paper-pieced block, this time a squirrel. It went together well, but after it was together I could tell the medium brown fabric blended in with the background quite a bit. What do you think?

So then I got the bright idea (well, stole the bright idea) of using something to give definition to the outline. I used a pigma pen. Don't know if the picture shows really well, but it does stand out a bit more. And where did I steal the idea? If you remember, I brought home a ton of magazines from a garage sale last weekend, and this idea was in one of them.
That medium brown fabric is a piece that my sister Sue gave me years ago, and was also used several years ago in this next piece you'll see. Its the background the moose is standing on. Its always fun to make something with those pieces that you can make a personal connction with.
Speaking of sister Sue, today happens to be her birthday! You might want to hop over to her blog and tell her happy birthday yourself! She always likes visitors. :)
So what do I come across today? A garage sale. Yep, you guessed it, the lady was a quilter. She wasn't at the sale, her niece was coordinating it, and you could tell the niece wasn't a quilter. Apparently Auntie is downsizing into a senior living center, so many things had to go.

When I inquired if there were any quilting or sewing items, she said the sewing machine was sold, but she had some magazines and bits of fabrics and trims. I got a sack of buttons, and a couple of little 25 cent bags of fabric, then she said I could just have the magazines if I wanted them. We got it all loaded in my car, and I spread them out just a little while ago. Not only are there quilting magazines, there are books, crochet magazines, a couple of patterns, and a couple of cross stitch kits. Free. I told her to make sure Auntie knew that it all went to a good home, someone who appreciates what she had. I also mentioned I have a few quilting buddies, and they'll share in it with me.
Yes one is sideways, I'm too lazy right now to change it.

It was almost sad seeing the niece be somewhat cavalier about Auntie's stuff. She was plenty nice enough, just wanted to get it out of there. She had a big stack of puzzles, and I could have had them all for $5, but I didn't have the room...though I did get 2. She did redeem herself in my mind though when she said there was no way she was selling Auntie's quilts. :)

The other sad thing is that just a few months ago I went through my stack of magazines, and cleared out close to as many as I got today. (eyeroll) These won't be around too long. I'll cull out articles that catch my eye (particularly interested in foundation paper piecing right now), and share them with friends to do the same. Having cleared out a bit of shelf space, I don't want to fill it back up.

Oh well, such is life. And yes, I'll still drop in on garage sales when one looks really good. :)

Remember my string quilt I was working on several weeks ago? When I got it together, I realized it needed borders to make it a workable size, but just didn't have the heart to continue at that point. I put it away until about a week or two ago, and was able to have the mindset to get back into it. I've stitched the 2 side borders to a foundation, and have a good start on finishing the quilting on one of those two. They will then be attached (remember its a quilt as you go project), and then I'll work on borders for the top and bottom. I'm glad I put it to the side instead of just rushing to bind it as it was.
Here are the two side borders, which of course will actually be joined with the same black print that join the other blocks.

I haven't decided yet how I'll do the corners where the borders meet.

In other news, I got a bill for my newspaper subscription the other day, and it was double what it was previously. I pay for a 6 month subscription for Sunday and Wednesdays. As I looked at the statement, I noticed it included the digital version of the paper. I really didn't feel it was worth paying extra for that, though I concede it could be nice. But I'm already able to get on the paper's website and see news stories, obituaries, editorials, and quite a bit of other items of interest. When I called to talk to someone, I was told they have included the digital service on all subscriptions now, and they couldn't separate it out. At that, I (politely) told her I'd just cancel the service when it came to it's termination date. I can always pick up the Sunday paper for their ads and coupons when I need it. Amazingly enough, she told me about a special they happen to have, and I can have the subscription for $36 (less than half of the billed amount) and yes, it will have the digital newspaper included. Works for me, but it's a shame you have to make the inquiry to get a good price. Reminds me of the cable TV services.

That's it for now. Hope you're having a good week. :)
Seems like I may have dropped the one it was replacing, can't remember. I don't think I had it a month, and I made the mistake of putting it on felt. What a mess! I tried to clean it, to no avail. It was so bad that I just bought another new iron. However, I just couldn't see tossing the scorched one, so I
put it back in my closet in its original box with its original
booklet. After all, I hadn't had it very long.

how well Linda's method of salt and waxed paper worked yesterday, today I
pulled the iron out of the closet and gave it a try. Can't say it
worked very well, maybe a bit. I looked on line, and found a method of
using heated white vinegar. Nothing to lose, I tried it. Might have
gotten a few particles off. Then I figured I definitely had nothing
to lose, so I dipped an SOS pad in the warm vinegar, and started
scrubbing. It came off!

Granted, upper 80's is not as hot as 100+ degrees, but I'm ready for highs in the 60's or 70's.

My neighbor wanted the twin bed frame I refinished, so since that's out of the way, I now have a new twin bed. I may get a headboard at some point but for now like the flexibility of putting it wherever I want it. I started out with it away from the wall, then decided flush against the wall is best for now for when Elise sleeps over. I'd like a chenille bedspread, so that will take some looking. In the meantime, I've got a quilt over it for a cover.

Since it's that time of year, I made a couple of pumpkins for decoration. Only have one to show, because Elise took the other one home. This was really a stash buster...used a piece of fabric about 10"x20". Click on the "pumpkins" link if you think you'd like to make one.

You may remember that last couple of years I've participated in the 12 Days of Christmas swap over on the HGTV quilting/sewing forum. I debated whether to do it this year, and decided I will. I've gotten a good start on it, and still have a few weeks to get finished. Of course I can't tell you what I'm making, but you'll be seeing pics of everything around Christmas. I like that I should be able to complete all of them with fabric I have on hand.

Guess that's it for now. Have a good week all.

In the past month, Elise turned 4! As she likes to tell me, she's a big girl now. :)
She celebrated with the new and improved version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, which was Stick the Freckle on the Pony (or something to that effect).

I've been working on the string quilt-as-you-go. Overall I'm pleased with it, considering this is my first time with this method. I can see myself doing more. I changed my mind on what I thought the layout would be, and went with this design. It's a little tedious joining rows together, but when I consider that it will be totally finished without quilting a huge top (or sending/paying to have it quilted by someone else), it's worth it. And I can see ways to make the next one a bit easier.

Here's a picture prior to joining the top two rows to the bottom section. I really need to put side borders on for some more width, but I'm somewhat ready to leave it at this size. I'm setting it aside for a week or two to see what I decide on.

I found this twin bed frame at a garage sale, and thought it might work to replace the crib/toddler bed.

I refinished it by sanding, staining, and varnishing. It was pretty dry and rough, but good wood.

So here it is. Came out fine, and I got it in the room. Then I decided it was bulkier than I wanted, and gave it to my neighbor. Ah well, it was a nice project, and Elise enjoyed helping with it.

There's a lot to say when I don't post for a month, isn't there???

Last but not least, I made a couple of Barbie dresses this week from free instructions on the internet. They had more cleavage than I particularly wanted, so they both were turned around and put on backwards. They're wrap dresses, so it worked fine. :)

Okay, that's it for now. Have a good week everyone.
But first, I need to show the mug rug I received from the Country Fair Mug Rug swap last month. Really cute, and City Sandie did a fine job. :) She was also nice enough to tuck in a little extra...a western book marker, and a quilt pattern. There are some really nice ladies on the HGTV quilting and needlework forum.
Lately I've been in a mode of wanting to use up some of my stash. I've got a bag that I've been tossing strings into for a few years now, and its bulging. Strings are strips of fabric left from other projects, or maybe even cut on purpose, usually from 1-2.5" wide, and various lengths. I've been wanting to try a quilt-as-you-go quilt, and started out with blocks that were 12.5" square. My original thought was to make it 3 or 4 squares wide by 4 or 5 squares long, and add borders. This was my original layout, before I had all squares complete. I could see it wasn't going to be big enough to do quite what I wanted.

So I expanded to the idea of 24 squares, making it 4x6 squares. Then I ran into a design opportunity. I didn't have enough of the fabric for the blue center strip, so I decided to work with some of the blocks having a burgundy center strip, allowing a design to show up. I also added in another blue fabric for some of the center stripes, and scattered them through so it looked planned.

You'll notice the burgundy in the 4 center squares, and also in the four corners. They're not sewn together at this point, because I'll be quilting each square individually before joining.

Here's some of the squares that are quilted. The blocks with one color in each square are the back side, and of course the strips are the front. I'm just doing simple quilting on it since I'm not comfortable with free motion quilting. A lot of people stitch in the ditch along each strip. but I really didn't want to mess with that much stitching.

I hope by this next weekend to start joining them, and getting the border prepared. Oh, and remember I said the blocks were initially 12.5" square? Now they're 11.5". Funny how that works out, isn't it? Little glitches here and there as I learn what I'm doing called for a modification. No biggee. My strings, my quilt.

I have another string in progress, but this one jumped out in the lead. I hope next time I'm back to bring you up to speed on the other one.

Before getting the string quilts started, I made a Christmas tree skirt. It's not quite in the league with the one I made Angela and Robert, and I really don't want it to be. That one was pretty special to me. However, I like this one too, partly because I used some of my Christmas fabric stash. As I put in some angel squares, that particular piece of fabric had a little note attached that it was purchased in the mid-90's, 1994 or '96 if I remember right. Where's it going to go? I don't know yet. I don't put up a tree anymore, but I'm thinking it might make a nice gift to someone one of these days. A lady on the HGTV forum gives tree skirts for wedding gifts. I'm thinking that might be a possibility. Or I may just use it as a little table topper.
The pic with no borders might show up a little sharper. Don't know yet how I'll quilt it, possible just a cross-hatch.

Guess that's it for now. In other news, Robert had a birthday this past week. I think he was about 2 or 3 in this picture. Time just keeps flying by! I went over and stayed with the kids while he and Angela went to dinner. I took my camera, but we got busy with "projects" and I didn't get any pictures taken...darn.
I had made a quilt for Cara's first baby about 8 years ago, and I understand she wagged it around for years. I can only hope this little one will like his as well as his big sister liked hers.
It was a fun little quilt to make. I've not had a lot of experience with fmq-ing (free motion quilting), so I did a cross-hatch quilting on it, going in diagonal lines across the quilt in both directions about 3 inches apart. I was pleased with how it came out.

In other news, this has been a relaxing summer. One thing I enjoy is an "occasional" game on my computer. :) One of the games is Chuzzle, and I like that it has a Zen mode that just allows you to play without a lot of obstacles in it. I'll play for awhile, then move on to something else, and when I return my score picks up where it left off. Well.....I hit 1,000,000 points recently! I don't know how long this particular game has been going on, months I'm sure, but now I'm working on two million.

I've also managed to play catch-up on some taking-care-of-me chores this month. I've been to the dermatologist and had a few spots frozen off, had my routine mammogram and colonoscopy, and a well-checkup with the related blood workup. I'm happy to say that everything is fine. Well, I've not heard on the mammogram yet, but should in the next few days. I figure there's nothing critical or they would have reached me by now. So, by getting this all done I was able to mark off a big check on my to-do list.

Lily's birthday was this past week, and she had a roller skating party to commemorate turning 11 years old. Needless to say, a good time was had by all. Its been years since I've been to a roller rink. It was nice to see the little supports like you see that Ashlynn has in front of her. While Elise and cousins Cage and Echo couldn't quite maneuver it real well, it was a big hit with several of the kids who were still new to roller skating.
I participated in another mug rug swap this month, and the theme was "In the Garden". I had in mind to find fabric with gnomes on it, but no luck. However, in my search this pattern for a paper pieced gnome kept popping up. I've done very little paper piecing, but decided to give it a try. Here's the pattern's picture:

I was really pleased with how it came out. In fact, I had to make another one so I could have one too!

These little guys have different hats, beards, and bindings, otherwise they're pretty much the same. Not knowing quite how to choose which one to part with I put them in a sack and pulled one out. My swap partner got the white bearded gnome, and I've kept the gray bearded fellow. I used a batik for the background, and really like the shaded look. It sets the tone for being in the underbelly of the garden, don't you think?

I liked the paper piecing so much I can see more of it in the near future. First though, I have a baby quilt to complete for an upcoming shower. You'll see pictures of it in 2 or 3 weeks.

That's it for now. Have fun summer days...
I painted it a few years ago, but can't say I was ever completely satisfied with it, plus I didn't like the popcorn ceilings.

Since Elise has a bit of a claim to the room, she helped choose the color...purple. So in the color family, I chose Behr's Lavender Bouquet for 3 walls, and an accent wall of Lilac Bloom. As it turns out, the accent wall was just a shade or two darker, so it's not really a noticeable difference unless you happen to paint a bit on the other wall by mistake (ask me how I know).

Elise wanted to help, and she happened to be staying with me for a couple of days shortly after I scraped the popcorn ceiling and got some cutting in done. We got her set up with a brush, and she enjoyed herself.
Previously it had been yellow, and most of the wall accents were in wood stains, or darker colors. I decided I wanted it air-ier, and painted most of them white. I have a bulletin board on another wall that will eventually get painted. I lucked out on the curtains, finding 4 sheers hanging in a closet that I had forgotten about. The clock was a garage sale find that I also painted. Nice to have this project done. And I won't be scraping anymore popcorn ceilings.

I forgot to post a picture of a storm cloud that came up on my trip to Arkansas recently. Shortly after I took the picture just outside of Greenville, it poured for several hours of my trip. I've always said that I can count on a rain either coming or going when I go to Sue's. I thought these clouds were amazing.
After I made mine I thought that would have been a nice feature to have, so was glad for the chance to see how to put one in. You may not be able to tell a whole lot from this, but here it is. I didn't show the bag itself because it's basically the same as mine. The zipper is the inset part where you see the baseball zipper pull.

I really like the baseball zipper pull. I looked several places for some kind of baseball charm, and finally at a sports store the fellow suggested Party City. Of course! Why didn't I think of that? Luckily it was just a few doors down, and they had terrific party favors. The baseballs were actually decorations on a beaded whistle lanyard...so I got 2 baseballs for 99 cents. And a whistle. Heckuva deal.

I made a quick trip to Arkansas to see my sister, and had a good time. I stayed at Petit Jean State Park in a cabin. Beautiful area with lots of scenic views. If you're into hiking, there are several trails.
Coming from the mountain to Sue's, I saw these horses in the field and stopped to take a picture. You've got to love small communities. A fellow came by in his truck, and slowed down, lowering the window. He noticed my out-of-state plates and wanted to make sure I was okay.
A few weeks ago when I was still watching Elise (I only keep her during the school year), she came across a baby blanket that Sue made for Elizabeth when she was a baby. She was wagging it around, and decided she wanted it hung on the wall, I guess like she sees my wall hangings. So we hung it up. It's held up well after all these years.
I've had in mind that I wanted a summery tote in patriotic colors, and I wanted to incorporate some Texas Rangers ribbon that I picked up last year, so I started looking around for some ideas. The Missouri Star Quilt Company has excellent video tutorials on all kinds of projects, so when I saw this tote made with charm packs, I was immediately drawn to it. I modified it a bit from their version because I wanted it a tad wider and taller, but the instructions lend themselves to adjustments. I added an inner pocked, and the closure flap. I will probably go back and shorten the shoulder straps some but want to live with it a week or two first. I watch Elise during the school year, but David had to go in Friday for a teacher's day after school was out. Since Lily was out of school, she came over too. She brought over some paper with the idea of making a cape type thing for her My Little Pony. As I watched her doing her cutting and taping, I offered to use her pattern and sew it in fabric. We agreed that it came out well.
And yes, you'll notice that Elise is dressed as Snow White. She had the dress on earlier in the week when we went to Target, and got a lot of smiles and comments from the other shoppers. :)
My intentions for this week (though it may take longer) are to clean up the back planting bed and put in some mulch. I'm doing it with my typical approach...bit by bit, it will get done. My plans are to be orderly and do one section at a time before it gets too hot in the day, so yesterday I was out there by 7:00 or so working up a sweat and getting dirt over me from head to toe. Here's the "before" in one section, and an "after" of what I did yesterday (a different section). I figure there will be about 7 or 8 sections this size.
In other news, you can now call me Madame Plumber. I had a problem with the toilet the other day, and in looking inside the tank discovered a plastic bar had broken off of the handle. I took a picture of the problem, went to Lowe's and found a replacement part, and came back home and replaced the handle mechanism. I know it's a small thing, but it always feels good to do something yourself and not have to ask for help.
As you can see I've added several pictures this time. I've been having issues with my laptop with the size of pictures I send from my phone and ipad, and also with the USB ports not working consistently to download from my camera. I went to Best Buy yesterday, and the guy in their Geek Squad was so helpful. He tinkered with it a bit, and took care of some needed updates (that I assumed was handled automatically). This may be a temporary fix, but if this can work it's sure better than the price of a new computer. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to get back to blogging more consistently!

That's it for now, catch you later.
