I see my doctor this morning for my medical release to return to full duty (aka retirement). You might think I was preparing for a date...shower, shave my legs, fix my hair. Anyway. Just before I got in the shower, I grabbed a box with a sample razor, one of those that come in the newspaper periodically. I already had my glasses off, and as I've noted before, I'm practically blind in the shower without them.
I lathered up, and started pulling the razor up my calf. Nice and smooth, I thought. No pull. Must be a good brand. I proceeded to the other leg, and my underarms, and then I happened to think...did I take off the little protective plastic that covers the blade?
Maybe I ought to check into that surgery that makes glasses unnecessary.

ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!
Truthfully I've about decided that this year I'd like to just have someone do it every couple of weeks, and I can putz around with some planting areas. But it needed mowing now.
"You think this is something I can do," I asked. She reassured me that it should be in my range of capability. "Spark plug too?" She asked if I had the socket or whatever it is to remove the spark plug, and when I asked what it looked like, pulled down the right package.
"Hmph!" At that point, I put the rubber thing back on the spark plug, primed the gas, and cranked 'er up. And she started! That spark plug is going to wait till one of the boys is around and they can change it out.
I didn't get any edging done, that will wait till another day, but at least the season's first mowing is over with. And I don't have to duck my head in shame every time I pull in the driveway, hoping no one sees me.
I know, I know, you're saying "let's see the mowed lawn". With the edges still shaggy, don't know that you can tell a difference, but I can. And I've got some weed killer, thanks to my knowledgeable HD associate, that I can put out whenever this wind quits blowing.

my muse has been missing
I don't know what's been happening lately, but I think my muse must have taken a vacation. Let's see if by taking the first step and putting down the first words, I can write.
The last month or so has been a bit different around here. We had snow around the 10th or 12th of February, which caused power outages, and now, March 20th, it's snowing again! Crazy. Liz and family stayed here 2 or 3 nights during the outage, and I have to say I enjoyed the company. David and Lily put together a snowman,
and the Scrabble game got dusted off and a few games played (I discovered a worthy opponent in David). I even had to add his name to the perpetual Scrabble trophy, and bring it to the front.
Now about this Scrabble trophy. About 20 years ago, Robert was still young enough to enjoy some Sunday afternoon games with me. As his skills improved, I bought a trophy, and had it inscribed as

SCRABBLE CHAMPION
SCRABBLE CHAMPION
The guidelines were that 2 wins out of 3 games entitled the winner to have his/her name on the trophy. We went all out, and the names were written on little recipe cards trimmed to 2" x 3". Two holes were punched in the top, and yarn was looped through. If you won, your card came to the front. For many years, the only names were mine, Robert, and Nolene. Regardless of who won, it stayed at my house, on my mantle.
Over the years and through the course of a couple of moves, it landed on a shelf in the closet. Rather sad, but such is life. Fortunately, the power outage gave new life to the trophy, and it's seeing daylight again. Who knows how long David's name will stay to the front, let's hope it doesn't take too terribly long for me to get a chance at rotation.
Haven't done a lot of sewing lately, but I did get this little pillow case for a travel pillow put together from fabric my BSS (bis secret sister) sent me. I'll be making another one before too long. I have a trip to Idaho planned in early summer, and brother Carl is going with me. We'll be taking a few days along the way to enjoy some sights and do some geocaching.
One other thing...brother-in-law Troy is in the hospital. Appreciate any prayers on his behalf.

we have a new cacher
Nolene and I took Elise out today and introduced her to geocaching. Well, as much as one can do from an infant car seat. The first one we weren't able to lock in on, so had to take a "did not find" on it, but we persevered on the next, and find it we did.
For all the excitement of seeing her first cache, her reaction seemed to be along the lines of....I'll just keep on holding onto my rattle, thanks...
That's ok, she'll catch the enthusiasm one of these days.

still keeping a list
I'm not completely in the retirement mode yet. There's still the taking it easy recuperating bit to go through for a few weeks which keeps me from jumping into things with both feet, so I guess I'm one foot in, and one foot waiting to follow.
True to my form, I've made a list of want-to's and to-do's. In the meantime, I'm doing the picking up and sorting that has been waiting for me to have more time. Went through computer files this morning and rearranged a few and deleted others. Still more of that to do, but I'll get there.
Several things on my list will just have to wait, but that gives me plenty of time to daydream about the wonderful yard I hope to create out back (positive imaging). I'll pull out my gardening and landscaping books and see what magic I can work.
Cornbread Salad
2 packages cornbread, cooked and crumpled
2 cans pinto beans, drained
chopped onion (recipe called for 2, but prepare to taste)
1 bell pepper, chopped
2 tomatoes, chopped (I used canned diced tomatoes)
Layer the items above in a 9 x 13 pan (here again I deviated...after crumpling the cornbread in the bottom of the dish, I combined the other ingredients and poured them over the cornbread)
Dressing: Mix together: 16 oz ranch dressing
1 cup pickle juice
Drizzle the dressing over the layers.
Top with 1 pound cooked bacon, crumpled into pieces.
Let set at room temperature for 2 hours.
Yummo. Dad always put pickle juice on his beans, and it does complement the flavors.

I've also done a bit of redwork over the last couple of weeks. This Santa will eventually be surrounded with assorted Christmas prints and be a quilted wall hanging. I'll be making a few of them, and one will actually go to my Secret Sis in her December package. I'm free to show it, because that's the month we'll reveal our identities. (Don't look too close at the wrinkles.)
And, last but not least, I've not done a lot on my cq this week. Picked up an embellishment or two though.
That's it for now. Have a good week...

I did actually prepare a meal this afternoon. High points go to the cornbread salad. Such a comfort food, it reminds me of Mom and Dad. Dad especially loved a good pot of beans, and this dish provides the beans and cornbread without the hours of simmering. Here's the recipe I used, though I did cut it in half of what's called for.

adjusting
I just experienced the weirdest thing. I fell asleep on the couch (and no, that's not the weird part, I do it regularly) and just woke up. Haven't got a clue if I was out for 30 minutes or 5 hours! I'm thinking 5 or 6 hours. I got out of the house a bit today, guess it wore me out.
I'm really getting into this retirement routine. I like it. :)

another journey
A week and half ago I finished up my physical presence at work. Monday I had a relatively minor surgery, and will be out on sick leave until my official retirement date in March. Unless you're already there, you can't imagine the feeling of freedom and anticipation that this milestone brings.
Now, I can't still fully appreciate it since I do have a recuperation period. But I can certainly enjoy that I don't have to watch the weather to see if the roads are passable (there have been a couple of snow days recently that I wouldn't have wanted to drive), I can stay in my jammies as long as I care to, and I don't have to rush to be somewhere at a certain time and be expected to stay there till another certain time. My cubicle days are over! While I really enjoyed the work and especially my co-workers and friends, I'm ready for this next stage of my life.
I'm defintely confined to the house for at least a week, then not quite so confined for the rest of the recuperation. I have been able to do my first stitching on the cq patch and expect to do some more in the next few days. I may have sat up a bit longer than I should yesterday, so today I'll lay around a bit more. Here's my first bit of cq stitching, as well as the back side. The patch itself was sewn to a muslin backing for additional support, which is what you see in the backing picture.
You'll also notice that I snipped a bit of the muslin off in the process, hopefully the quilt police are looking the other way. I love the little cameo type piece that has been attached, now will have to audition different stitches or laces for the next bit I do.
My sis has been a big help this week. She stayed with me a couple of nights, taking me to and from the hospital, and getting me settled in back here at home. Couldn't have done it without her...thanks, Nolene!
